Old boards are not upgraded - they are replaced, and everything behind them is proven.
A new board changes the behaviour of every circuit behind it - each cable must be tested rather than assumed. That is why installation jobs with us start at the panel's record and end with the schedule of test results written out; nothing is fitted and left unfathomable.
